The lounge room is generally a space in the home where you will spend a significant amount of time. Getting the lighting right here is important for a number of different reasons.

The most important reason being that the lighting environment you create here will determine how you create the ideal space for relaxation after a long day at work.

Like any other space in the home it’s important that the lounge room has three different types of lighting: task, accent and general lighting. You will use the different lights within the room for different reasons.

Your ceiling downlights or central light fixture is considered the general lighting in your lounge room. Dimmable downlights are ideal as they allow you to control the level of light.

Avoid having a large ceiling pendant light directly above or in front of the television as this will cause glare. That’s why dimmable ceiling lights are really ideal.

If you do have a central lounge room light fixture, installing a large, statement pendant light helps to create a feature as well as a focal point in the space.

Accent lighting is the lighting that creates a calm, tranquil atmosphere in your lounge room. Table lamps and floor lamps that are evenly spaced are the best way to do this. You don’t need too many, just a few lamps that shine the light toward the walls and bounce it back in to the room will do the trick. Finish off the space with a cluster of flameless candles on the coffee table in the center of the room.

Task lighting often refers to lights that assist with a particular task. For example, if you enjoy reading in your lounge room, ensuring you have a floor lamp at the right height next to your favourite lounge chair will ensure sufficient lighting for reading at night.

Be creative with the way you use lighting and experiment until you come up with a lighting layout you truly enjoy.
