How to create the perfect guest room

While we might not be able to have guests staying over right now, now might actually be the best time to create the perfect guest room. Here are a few simple things you can do to turn your spare room into a comfortable and cosy retreat for when you can have friends or family stay the night.

Keep it simple

Loud colours and patterns - as wonderful as they are - are best avoided in guest rooms. A neutral colour palette with natural materials and textures is more likely to soothe your guests. Express yourself with textures and layering but keep the foundation simple and refined.

Don't forget the extra furniture

Make sure to include a bedside table or another easily accessible surface area. This way your guests have a designated spot to put away their keys, wallet and phone at the end of the day. If you have the space, consider placing a small table or desk in the room so your guests can plug in their laptop or tablet.

Storage solutions

No one likes to live out of suitcase - even if it's just for a few days. Clear some space in the wardrobe so your guests can empty their bags - they will feel much more comfortable during their stay and you can declutter. If you're low on space, check out open storage solutions or clothes organisers that you can hang on the back of the door.

Be practical

While you may not use your spare bedroom much, this will be your guest's private sanctuary while they stay over. Don't place furniture where your guest will naturally walk through. Also, be conscious of where your power outlets are; having to move the bedside table or crawling under the bed to plug in a charger isn't a nice experience. It's also worth providing some basic toiletries - just in case your guest forgets anything. A few travel-size essentials in a nice basket will make your guest feel extra special.

Double up on bedding

We all have different needs and preferences when it comes to body temperature so make sure you include a lightweight blanket for guests who tend to heat up quickly and a heavier winter blanket for those who freeze easily. Offer two towels for each guest and place a spare set of bedding in the room.

Keep it clean

This one may be obvious but don't forget to thoroughly clean the room before your guests arrive. Vacuum and dust all the nooks and crannies, give the windows a spray and wipe, and let in some fresh air the day before so your guests arrive to a nice and fresh room.
