Star Casino gambles on new apartments

Fancy living above Sydney’s The Star Casino? Star Entertainment has just revealed plans for a 60-storey tower featuring luxury apartments and a brand new Ritz Carlton hotel.

Valued at around $500 million the development would see the creation of 150 apartments in a tower rising above the casino on the Pyrmont peninsular, along with 220 hotel rooms for the new six-star Ritz Carlton. The international hotel brand has been absent from the Sydney hotel landscape since 2009.

The new concepts are the result of The Star inviting leading architectural firms to submit plans in a competition to create the new addition to the casino complex.

Each has its own character and it’s always interesting to see how diverse approaches can deliver multiple solutions to the one creative challenge. Our favourite is fjmt’s ‘twisted tubes’ design (we named it that), though each will offer a striking addition to the Pyrmont skyline.

There are no firm details for the 150 apartments at this stage, but clearly one of the draw cards of living above The Star has to be the selection of renowned restaurants, bars and entertainment options on your doorstep. The new development itself will add a further 20 bars and eateries into the mix.

The vibrant harbourside suburb of Pyrmont itself is home to some of the most acclaimed restaurants in Sydney, and the increase in tourism to the area is undoubtedly a key driver in the decision to extend the complex.

If you’re keen to live amongst the celebs and high rollers at The Star you might just have to wait a while — once the winning architect is selected, the completed building is set to open in 2020-21.
