With relaxed beaches and leafy streets dotted with heritage Victorian and Edwardian houses, a thriving retail development, and Church street’s famous café and restaurant scene, Brighton holds its head high as one of Melbourne’s best suburbs. Developer Lucent, together with the renowned Austin Maynard Architects, has commenced construction on Slate House.

More than just another suburban apartment development, Slate House embraces Brighton’s architectural heritage; integrating design notes from the longstanding local classics. Upon completion in late 2021, the apartment development will be marked by beautifully tiled roofs, raw and robust materials, and lush gardens without the typical sprawl and daily maintenance. The design aesthetics celebrate a natural, durable and expressive material palette.

Andrew Maynard of Austin Maynard Architects comments, “we have combined timeless techniques and new technologies to create sophisticated, yet functional ‘forever’ homes. We pride ourselves in sustainable design and experimentation, so with Slate House, we have ensured a lifestyle with sustainability not as a consideration, but as a part of day-to-day life.”

The timeless designs are not driven by architectural trends, rather inspired by local heritage. The two and three-bedroom apartments feature more than the usual luxury fitouts and spacious floor plans. In addition to Gaggenau appliances, Tasmanian oak feature panelling and natural stone benchtops, all Slate House apartments have been thoughtfully designed so the project as a whole boasts an 8.2 minimum NatHERS rating. The development’s sustainability initiatives continue through to integrated carbon neutral operations, no fossil fuel connections, considered cross-flow ventilation and extensive internal acoustic insulation as standard.

Slate House indeed offers a new perspective on apartment developments; demonstrating that aspirational designs can certainly be translated into bricks and mortar. The marriage between high-end aesthetics and a sustainably built space may seem ambitious but Lucent and Austin Maynard Architects have executed the vision impeccably at Slate House. More than just apartments, the development reimagines the best features of traditional Brighton homes with an environmentally conscious approach to living; a highly sustainable, new way of living.

Slate House is currently under construction with an expected completion date of late 2021. For more information on securing a Slate House apartment, click here.
