Melbourne-based architects ArchiBlox have designed what is being billed as the first carbon positive pre-fabricated home. The home is currently on display in Melbourne's City Square as part of the Sustainable Living Festival, which runs until March 1. Carbon positive buildings—buildings which produce more energy than they need to run—will play an increasingly important role reducing emissions in future.

The house is oriented to the north to take full advantage of the sun, with solar panels on the grass-covered roof to capture its energy and floor to ceiling windows at the front of the house to allow in maximum light and heat during winter. It has been designed to not need air-conditioning or heating, and its small size minimises the use of electricity and power. Over its lifespan, the house is calculated to emit less greenhouse gases than a standard home of similar size and function that it is equivalent to taking 267 cars off the road, or planting more than 6,095 native trees.

The House has been Awarded an eTool Platinum Rating for Life Cycle Assessment, that indicates a 90 per cent overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to the Australian benchmark.
